The Taipei Kid

Rants/raves + false childhood memories

Misdemeanor

My secret spies tell me some people weren’t impressed with Missy Elliot’s concert last night. There’s the usual unprofessional comments that insiders here make about many visiting artists when they get a chance to get close (the artist looks, um, a little bigger than she does in her videos, questions about her sexuality, blah, blah, blah). The crowd, however, was not really happy about being treated to over 90 minutes of opening acts. I can see having to wait an hour and a half for Madonna, but not Missy Elliot, and I don’t care how many times they force us to listen to her albums at California gym (which, strange enough, has been a lot in the weeks leading up to her concert. I am really sick of that toys song–really inappropriate gym music.) The big laugh apparently came when she tried to pass the mike to audience members for “Get Your Freak On”. No one knew the words. (On the other hand, the tickets weren’t really pricey–NTD 900/1800.)

Update: Looks like my spies were right. The Taipei Times blasted her show today as “another big name from the US coming to Taiwan for a pay day and doing the barest minimum in return.”
