Whatever Happened to the Mangosteen?

Whatever happened to the mangosteen? You used to be able to get these at the supermarket here and it seems they just disappeared–they haven’t sold them anywhere here in a while. Does anyone know?

they still import them, but just not much now. most mangosteen are grown in the wild, so they produce a white cotton-like substance on its outer shell (which is a type of natural insect-repellent). the taiwanese government deems this substance as a type bacteria / germ and the only way to rid of these at the moment is with a torch. needless to say, after being burnt the outer shell looks all black and burnt like a cole, which caused sales to drop dramatically. my mom used to import them.
