Benq’s Sour 9/11 Note

December 6th, 2006 · 3 Comments

Leave it to our sweet, little (Taipei-based) Benq to create an ad campaign that capitalizes on the collapse of the World Trade Center. And just in time for the holiday season, too! We belive they really screwed up with this one, but we’ve never had many nice things to say about this company anyway. Good thing they “have put a process in place to prevent this type of incident from happening again“.

The amazing thing about BENQ trying to make money off 9-11 imagery is that the Chinese-language text is far more offensive than the stuff about music “making hope” in English: “Even if the Earth is destroyed, I still believe in music.”

This matches exactly the Taiwanese reaction to 9-11 — these are people who celebrated the whole thing, held pro-Bin Laden signs up at the Baseball World Cup games against team USA. There are a lot of Taiwanese with a lot of unwarranted hostility towards Americans and the United States. BENQ’s next line of headphones will be advertised using Nicholas Berg’s severed head.

How about this, even if Taiwan (and BENQ) is destroyed by PRC missiles, I will still believe in music.

How about this as a trade — he can continue to “believe in music” and dance about while 9-11 happens and I can choose to do so if and when Taiwanese die in a mudslide, earthquake, typhoon or other disaster.
